A man has died and a woman critically injured in a double shooting during the evening rush hour in north London.

The two victims were injured in the street in Lordship Lane, Wood Green, at around 5.45pm in what witnesses have said was a drive-by shooting.

The man died at the scene a little over an hour later, at 7pm. The woman remains in a critical but stable condition, police have said.

The victim was identified locally as a father-of-two of Turkish descent, who ran a shop in the area.

Ibrahim Yurdajul, the owner of nearby takeaway Cozy Chicken, said the man had been a friend of his since he opened his business eight years ago.

The man had been on the street when he was shot, along with a woman who Mr Yurdajul said he believes was a passer-by.

He said he was working in his shop when he heard five or six shots, which sounded as though they came from an automatic weapon.

His brother had been outside at the time and hit the ground to avoid being shot, he added.

He said he saw three or four men in a car - all of whom had guns - as they drove away.

It is the latest in a string of gun-related incidents in the street, he added - including an attempted shooting recently where a man had shown up with a gun, but the trigger had "locked up" and no shots were fired.

Haydar Alma, the owner of a nearby Polish shop, told ITV News he too had heard the shots - and had tried to help the injured man.

He said he was asked to bring tissues to try to stop the bleeding while they waited for emergency services to arrive.

Mr Alma, 42, said there were lots of people around at the time who rushed to help the two victims.

It was not until he asked a police officer later on that he realised the man had died.

Cordons and diversions are now in place and forensics teams are at the scene. A number of what appear to be bullets or bullet casings have been found.

No arrests have been made.
