Kanye West's Glastonbury performance interrupted by comedian Lee Nelson

Kanye West's much-anticipated Glastonbury performance was interrupted last night when comedian Lee Nelson invaded the stage.

Nelson - wearing a t-shirt with 'Lee-zus' on it - stormed on to the Pyramid Stage just minutes into the headline act.

The prankster, real name Simon Brodkin, was quickly bundled off stage by security, allowing a bemused Kanye West to finish his song Skinhead.

The comedian - who has become known for his various stunts - later tweeted that he wanted to give the rapper "a hand" following the controversy over his headline billing.

Many fans were quick to point out that West may have been getting a taste of his own medicine with the stage invasion.

In September 2009, West crashed Taylor Swift's acceptance speech at the Video Music Awards when the pop star beat Beyonce to the prize of Best Female Video.

The rapper also interrupted Beck's Grammy speech in February 2015.

The unpredictable rapper's booking at the festival divided fans and an online petition calling for his removal attracted over 134,000 signatures.

Emily Eavis, the co-organiser of the festival, even received online abuse.

But West attempted to defy his critics with a rollercoaster performance featuring his biggest hits, including Good Life, Gold Digger and All Falls Down.

Appearing to acknowledge the controversy surrounding his billing, West told the audience: "You are now watching the greatest living rock star on the planet."

West also paid tribute to his wife Kim Kardashian - who is expecting the couple's second child - during the set, saying she " brought this poetry out of me".

So what did music fans make of West's Glastonbury performance?

Well, unsurprisingly they remained divided.
