A documentary about the brutal gang rape and murder of a woman on a Delhi bus in 2012 has been banned in India on the grounds of "objectionable content".

Leslee Udwin's India's Daughter features an interview with Mukesh Singh, one of five men convicted over the attack, in which he blames the 23-year-old victim.

He tells the documentary makers that the murdered student should not have been out at night and should not have fought back against her attackers.

"A court has passed [an] order prohibiting the publication and transmission of the interview till further orders," Rajan Bhagat, a spokesman for Delhi Police, told Reuters.

"He had made offensive and derogatory remarks against women, creating an atmosphere of fear and tension with the possibility of public outcry."

The film was due premiere in India on March 8 - International Women's Day.

Udwin told AFP that her "heart was broken" by the Indian court's decision.

"The more they try to stop the film, the more they are going to pique people's interest. Now, everyone is going to want to see it," she added.
