Five drones were spotted flying over sensitive buildings in Paris overnight, sparking an investigation into their activity.

The small unmanned aircrafts were seen above the American Embassy, the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre Museum.

Paris police confirmed the presence of drones in Paris airspace, while French authorities said that - though they currently pose no threat - scientists have been asked to help develop a means of counteracting the devices.

A special team of air transport officers has been created to address the incident and witnesses have been questioned, AFP reported.

There have been dozens of sightings of unexplained drones over Paris in recent months, which have been spotted flying over the presidential palace, military installations and nuclear plants.

The reports come at a time of heightened security in the French capital following last months terror attacks on the offices of Charlie Hebdo and a Jewish supermarket.
