Gary Glitter: Famous rock star turned notorious sex offender
By Neil Connery: ITV News Correspondent
Known to millions as Gary Glitter, the former Glam rock star - whose real name is Paul Gadd - faced charges relating to sexual offences committed against three girls in the 1970s and early 1980s.
Gadd found fame in the 70s as Gary Glitter with a string of hits.
He was at the height of his popularity at the time of his crimes.
As he was reviving his career in the 90s he spoke in one interview about the 80s being difficult years and his drink and drug abuse.
Prosecutor John Price QC said the singer tried to rape a girl under the age of 10 in the mid 70s and indecently assaulted two young fans after his concerts.
The victim told the court he gave her an Easter Egg the day after the attempted rape and acted as though nothing had happened.
In November 1999, he pleaded guilty to possessing more than 4,000 child abuse images and was jailed for four months.
The images were discovered on his computer which he had handed in to a PC world store to be repaired.
When questioned about it during this latest trial he broke down in tears saying he was abused as a child.
In 2006, Gadd was jailed for three years by a Vietnamese court for sexually abusing two girls who were 11 and 12.
At the time the former star protested his innocence and claimed he had been the victim of a conspiracy by one newspaper.
Gadd was deported in 2008 heading back to UK and was put on the sex offenders register.
Six years later Gadd, who's now 70, was the first person to be arrested as part of Operation Yewtree set up in the wake of the Jimmy Savile scandal.
He's now the fifth person to be convicted as part of that wider police investigation.
