A woman who was born with the genetic make-up of a man has given birth to "miracle' twins after hormone replacement therapy enabled her to grow a womb that was big enough to carry children.

Hayley Haynes and her husband Sam, told Good Morning Britain it was "miraculous" that they had been able to conceive with the help of medical treatment and were delighted with the "amazing little creatures" that had joined their family:

Mrs Haynes, from north London, said: "They are so special and I think the journey we have had over the last few years have made them even more so."

The 28-year-old mother was "devastated" when she was originally told at the age of 19 that she would not be able to have children as she had been born with XY chromosomes and despite growing as a woman her female reproductive organs had not developed.

However, when doctors discovered that she did in fact have a small womb that could potentially grow to a size big enough to carry babies she we delighted.

She said: "We found that I had a tiny womb and that gave us some hope".

Her husband added: "Finding out there was a womb was an incredible moment because you go from absolutely no chance ... to suddenly being able to bear it and that is an incredible thing."

Hayley underwent hormone replacement therapy to replace the female hormones that she was missing and this enabled her womb to develop to a size where it was able to carry children.

After five years of treatment she conceived in April 2014 and defied the odds to give birth to twin girls Avery and Darcey on Christmas Eve.
