A boy who claimed to have seen heaven during a near death experience has said the book he wrote is a fake and urged sellers to pull it from the shelves.

Alex Malarkey was ten when he and his father were involved in a car accident in 2004. Alex was seriously injured and left in a coma, when he woke he told his family and doctors that he had visited heaven.

A book The Boy Who Returned From Heaven was published in 2010 with Alex and his father as authors and was one of the New York Times bestsellers.

However in an open letter published on the website pulpitandpen Alex claims he made up the entire story to get attention after the accident.

Speaking to the Washington Post one major Christian publisher, Tyndale, said it would be pulling the book from sale after Alex's admission.

Alex's mother Beth wrote a post last year calling the book into question and saying that Alex did not make any money from the book.
