New Star Wars character names revealed

The names of a number of characters in the new Star Wars film have been revealed by US publication Entertainment Weekly.

The revelations put names to some of those seen in the recently-released trailer for The Force Awakens, which is directed and co-written by JJ Abrams.

These are some of the names, according to the website:

BB-8

BB-8, as we now know him to be called, bore a striking resemblance to the much-loved R2-D2 from the original Star Wars films.

Poe Dameron

The steely-faced X-Wing pilot played by Inside Llewyn Davis actor Oscar Isaac will be named Poe Dameron.

Finn

According to LucasFilm, Finn is seen here "on the run" in a Stormtrooper uniform - perhaps explaining his panicked expression. He too is played by a Brit - John Boyega.

Rey

Seen in the trailer on her Speeder vehicle, Rey is played by British actress Daisy Ridley.

Kylo Ren

It is unclear who plays Kylo Ren, but signs from the trailer suggest he is the villain.

Many of the characters still lack second names, meaning an element of mystery remains as to their roles in the new film.
