Breathtaking pictures of new Siberian crater
When a giant hole suddenly opens up in the earth, most of us would choose not to go down it.
But scientists in Russia did just that as they are determined to discover the origins of the mysterious crater which suddenly appeared in Siberia last summer.
A team from the Russian Center of Arctic Exploration descended about 50 feet into the crater on November 9 reaching the frozen surface of a small lake estimated to be at least 30 feet deep.
Geologists and historians have yet to come to a consensus about the origins of the hole.
But climate change has been cited as a possible cause after an explosion caused by an object such as a meteoroid was ruled out.
