Johnny Depp prompted some raised eyebrows last night with a slurred and expletive-ridden speech at a televised awards ceremony.

The Pirates of the Caribbean actor appeared to be stumbling on the stage as he presented a segment at the Hollywood Film Awards - prompting suggestions he may have been drunk.

In a rambling speech to the audience, he attempted to present an award for documentary Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon, with talent manager Gordon himself shown laughing in the audience.

It all looked ominous when Depp began opining about the "weirdest microphone I've ever seen in my life."

"I'm not very good at this kind of thing," he then added, before a few rather ruder words were blocked out by broadcaster CBS.

Some more bizarre rambling later, Depp swore again and was cut off shortly after admitting: "It's one of those nights."

Fortunately, Gordon and Mike Myers - who directed the film being honoured - saw the funny side, with the latter describing it as a "very rock and roll" intro.
