Young elephant bravely battles 14 lions

A young elephant fights off an astounding 14 lions in this remarkable video from a safari lodge in Zambia.

In the video, the elephant - named 'Hercules' by staff at the Norman Carr Safari lodge - is shown separate from his herd and surrounded by a pride of hungry, marauding, lionesses.

Outnumbered and with no apparent hope, Hercules fends off the attack by darting into the river to discourage the big cats.

According to the Norman Carr Safaris website, the youngster emerges unscathed from the fray.

Innocent, one of the witnesses said and a staff member at the Chinzombo Camp in Zambia : "In the many years I have been a safari guide in Zambia at the South Luangwa, never have I seen anything like this,

"We were all so worried the elephant would be killed right before us. What a fighter. It fought off all 14 lions. Incredible."
