A Dutch man is hoping to raise enough money to buy himself a prosthetic limb - by selling a lamp which features his own amputated leg.

Leo Bonten, from the Netherlands, had his right leg removed after he contracted a bacterial infection after an accident in 2012.

Mr Bonten, who is in his 50s, has had the leg made into a lamp which he now hopes to sell for more than £78,000 so he can buy himself a prosthetic replacement.

He explains how he came up with the idea in a short YouTube video.

In an interview with nrc Reader, he said: "My leg is just my property. People keep their kidney stones in a jar on the mantelpiece. Ashes of deceased persons are included in tattoos. I'm going to make a lamp of my leg, and I keep my foot down."

In a separate interview with Ruptly, Mr Bonten said: "I want to sell the leg lamp because the prosthetic leg i'm going to get from the insurance I won't be able to do a lot with it.

"And I want to have a prosthetic leg that would be capable to do a lot of things but that costs some money."

He said he hoped the creation would catch the eye of an "eccentric billionaire" who would want it because "it's the only one in the world."
