Newsnight editor Ian Katz has apologised after calling Labour MP Rachel Reeves "boring" and "snoring" in a tweet.

The former Guardian deputy editor meant to send his remarks in a private message but accidentally tweeted it to his near-27,000 followers.

He tweeted: "Tnks (sic)...except for boring snoring rachel reeves...playout was fun tho, wasn't it? telly MUCH netter than snooooozepapers innit."

His post has been deleted.

The Labour MP for Leeds West and shadow chief secretary for the Treasury replied:

Mr Katz, who has only been the Newsnight editor for several days, later apologised for his remarks on the social networking site, calling his tweet "ill-judged".

Mr Katz became the head of the flagship BBC programme after replacing Peter Rippon, who left in the wake of the Jimmy Savile crisis.
