CCTV footage has captured the moment a man in Arizona apparently won half of the $588 million (around £366m) US Powerball lottery.

The man is seen checking his ticket before confirming the numbers with an employee and customers in the store.

The apparent winner then runs out of the store in Maryland but quickly returns to pay for petrol.

Store employee Kamran Afgan said the winning ticket appeared to be genuine and contained the winning numbers.

There has been no official confirmation from Powerball whether the man seen in the video has won his share of the jackpot.

However, lottery officials have confirmed that a mechanic and his wife from Missouri have one of the two winning tickets.

Mark Hill, 52, confirmed on Facebook that he had won the Powerball, according to newspressnow.com.

He wrote: "We are truly blessed ... we were lucky winners of the powerball!"

The $588 million jackpot is the second highest in US history, with three people winning $656 million (about £409m) in March.

The jackpot had rolled over 16 consecutive times without a winner.
