Sally Dynevor: Coronation Street saved my life

Coronation Street star Sally Dynevor says she can't wait for her on screen daughters Rosie and Sophie to return to the street as she revealed that her character's breast cancer storyline saved her life.

The 53-year-old actress, who has played her namesake Sally Metcalfe in the soap for almost 30 years, spoke of her excitement ahead of Rosie's return, played by actress Helen Flanagan.

''In the storyline Sophie has gone to Miami to meet Rosie and they both come back together,'' Sally said.

"I'm so excited about them coming back - I've missed them so much!''

Sally, who was on the show to promote new play Genesis, discovered that she had a cancerous tumour in 2009 after her character's breast cancer storyline inspired her to have a lump checked out . It was just a few weeks before her diagnosis that Sally had learned of her upcoming storyline.

Sally, who is a patron of charity Prevent Breast Cancer, told Lorraine: ''The street saved my life.

"I didn't even think about breast cancer; I was 46 and far too young to get breast cancer, so it was a bit of a shock.''

Sally's new play is all about breast cancer and aims to give people a better understanding of the disease and prevention.

Genesis is on at the Soho Theatre until Saturday 19 November.
