India Willoughby: My Double Life
From my earliest memories, I didn't feel like I fit into my own skin
Former ITV News presenter Jonathan Willoughby joins Lorraine to talk about leading a double life for five years as a woman and how life has changed since he underwent a sex change.
The 50-year-old presenter quit ITV's regional news show in Carlisle, Cumbria, in 2010 after ten years of presenting and reporting, but during his entire career, he had been harbouring a huge secret - he believed he was a woman.
In order to deal with how he was feeling, Jonathan decided to divide his time between being a man and a woman.
He said, "So from Monday to Friday, I lived in Newcastle as Joanne Charles and worked in PR and at the weekends I went home to Carlisle to be Jonathan Willoughby and spend time with my son."
Jonathan managed to hide his double life for five years before deciding that he needed to end the secret and become the one person he'd always wanted to be.
The newsreader completed his sex change operation earlier this year and now goes by the name of India.
"I came up with India Willoughby because I saw this as a clean start and I wanted to be someone who represented both parts of me," India said.
