There were over 16 million deaths in WWI and dying with many of the wounded were their stories, leading to many forgotten lives.
Today, as we mark 100 years since the war, we go on a journey of discovery with Ben Shephard as he pieces together the jigsaw puzzle of his family's WWI past.
While many men were fighting on the front line, an equal number were looking after the injured and wounded, including Ben's great grandad Levi Shephard. Meanwhile his other grandfather was keeping things going on the home front.
