Line rent and broadband £12/month, car hire warning, Homebase and Poundland discounts and £10 off petrol. These are our Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis’ Deals of the Week. These are our Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis’ Deals of the Week.
Remember, deals can change quickly, even while I’m on the programme. So always double-check the terms and conditions before spending. Plus, while I hope these deals will save you cash, don’t spend if you can’t afford it, don’t need it, or won’t use it.
Web exclusive: Warehouse 25% off with £2 mag
In this week's copy of Grazia magazine (£2, Amal Clooney on the front) you’ll find a code on page 125 to get 25% off online at Warehouse and a voucher to use in stores by Tuesday 5 May. The discount can't be used on sale items or giftcards, and can only be used in one transaction.
SSE line rent and broadband £12/month
Cheap deals are often convoluted and complex, for example pay a year upfront, voucher reclaims etc. Yet the new SSE Everyday Broadband deal is simple – you pay £12/month for line rental and get broadband included for two years. So it costs £144 over a year which compares well to BT’s standard line rent and broadband at £360/year or Virgin at £410. See Martin’s Best-Buy Broadband guide for full info.
The line rental contract length is 12 months but you also sign up to an 18-month broadband contract. If you cancel the broadband between 12 and 18 months, you’ll pay £4/month until the 18 month point. You get unlimited weekend calls to UK landlines on this (max 70 mins per call). There are extra charges if you need the line installed.
Warning: You need a DVLA code to hire a car in UK or abroad
From 8 June, new rules mean if you’re hiring a car you need to request a personal code up to 72 hours before picking up a car either in the UK or abroad. This is so hire car firms can check for points, as paper licences are being scrapped for this purpose. You may not be asked for a code, but to be safe, ensure you get one in advance.
To get the code, request it from DVLA via Gov.uk or by calling 0300 790 6801. Give this code to the rental desk when you pick up your car – it effectively gives the company temporary access to your licence info, but annoyingly it only lasts 72 hours before expiring, so you need to time it right.
Martin’s quickies
- Homebase 15% off this weekend: Go online to Homebase or visit your nearest store from Saturday 2 May and you’ll get 15% off almost everything until Monday 4 May. No voucher’s needed as 15% will come off automatically at the checkout. It applies to most full-price and reduced items. I’d also always check the price now just to ensure it’s the same this weekend.
- Poundland £2 off £12 with 55p paper: If you buy the Daily Mirror newspaper (55p) in England, Wales or Scotland on Saturday, you’ll find a voucher printed inside to get £2 off when you spend £12 or more in store at Poundland until Saturday 9 May. The voucher will also be printed in the Scottish Sunday Mail on Sunday 3 May but as it costs £1.60, it’s not as lucrative.
- Amex cardholders £10 off £50 Shell petrol spend: Until Sunday 28 June (or before if it runs out), anyone with a personal Amex card (including cards issued by Lloyds, TSB, MBNA and Barclays), can get cashback at Shell - £10 cashback on a £50 spend, Vue Cinemas - £10 cashback on a £25 spend, Boots £5 cashback on a £20 spend and more. To get it log into your account and go to the ‘Offers’ section.
